Director William M. Millikeu of The Cleveland Museum cf Art, announces
accession of the painting, "The Annunciation," by Paolo Caliari, called Veionese,
Venetian, 1528-1588, purciiased through gift of Hanna Fund.
It is a large work, 59 x 52 ^ done with all the skill of one of the greatest
artists of the Renaissance, with all the meBterliness of form, and the rich color softened
by the golden light of Venice in its heyday. Hanry Sayies Francis, curator of paintings
of the Cleveland Museum calls it is a "faultless painting."
The scMie is that of the New Testament, Luke It 26-38, where tne Angel
Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary, in her mother's house, to tell her she is to be the
mother of the Messiah.
Veronese was bom in Verona, the son of a sculptor, apprenticed to a painter
at 13* He went to Venice at 25 and remained there most of his life, his work contributed
much to the glory of the beautiful city
